Anya Ettinger said the listing paints a "grim" picture of housing affordability in major cities. But, according to the listing, you wouldn't just be sharing the apartment space — you'd be sharing a queen-sized bed too. According to Ettinger, listings like this one are a result of the affordable housing crisis in Toronto. But as of today, Ettinger said the listing she discovered is just another example of how severe the housing crisis is. "It just paints a very grim picture of the affordability crisis that we're experiencing here," she said.

A New York City non-profit is piloting a program to pay for students' housing so they can complete their degrees. The New York Times spoke with one student who was on the verge of dropping out before receiving this benefit. According to one 2019 reported from The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, almost three in five college students reported experiencing housing insecurity the previous year. 18% of two-year college students and 14% of four-year students reported experiencing homelessness at some point, the researchers found. Homeless students reported lower GPAs and higher dropout rates, according to a report by the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools.

Residential builders are feeling the pinch of higher financing costs of their own. He estimated that, in aggregate, developers like him would decrease production by 10% to 20% this year, in a potentially devastating setback for affordable housing. "The failure to act is only made clear a few years later, given the timeline of real-estate development," he said. "In a couple of years from now, we're going to look back and say this was a missed opportunity" to close the affordable housing gap. "Financing can be very targeted towards affordable development and can be subsidized much more aggressively," he said.

Researchers at Apartment Guide published a list of the US cities with the most expensive rents. Assuming renters pay under 30% of their income for housing, the list also includes the salaries needed to afford those rents. New York City topped the list, with Boston and west coast cities rounding out the rest of the top 10.
